Conditional use permit (CUP)
A discretionary permit that allows a use not normally permitted in a zone, subject to conditions and often a public hearing.
Some cities require a conditional use permit to operate a short-term rental in certain zones. Unlike a routine license, a CUP can involve neighbor notification, hearings, and conditions, and approval is not guaranteed.
