Accessory dwelling unit (ADU)
A secondary self-contained living unit on the same lot as a primary home.
ADUs occupy a special place in STR rules: some cities encourage them for long-term housing and therefore prohibit short-term renting them, while others allow an owner-occupant to STR either the main house or the ADU but not both.
